Are Ads Coming to Kindle?

Finding a way to make Kindle more profitable until it catches on to the extent that physical books wind up on the endangered species list has been a challenge faced by Amazon.com for some time now.

But rumblings already this week about the addition of advertisements to the Kindle ereader platform
have begun suggesting that Amazon is up to something.

The cause for suspicion?

Reading into their recent patent applications including one titled “On-Demand Generating E-Book Content with Advertising” pretty much gives it away. No journalistic elbow-grease required.

The patents elaborate in great technological jargon about what we all know is likely in store for Kindle in the near future - ad placements.

What remains unclear is how the ads will look, where they will be placed, and what - if anything - can be done to offer ads that don’t spoil the reputation of Kindle or detract from its quality as an emerging and well-respected product.

We’re bound to hear more about Amazon’s ambitious plans in the days and weeks ahead.
